Drawbacks of the Buchi Syncore Parallel Evaporation System

Parallel evaporators have become increasingly popular in analytical laboratories seeking to improve sample throughput and efficiency. BUCHI's Syncore® series represents one of the leading solutions in this market, offering sophisticated automation and high-capacity processing capabilities. However, as with any advanced laboratory equipment, potential users should carefully consider both the benefits and limitations before making an investment decision. While these systems excel at handling multiple samples simultaneously, various user experiences and technical discussions have highlighted several significant drawbacks that laboratories should evaluate when considering parallel evaporation technology.

The following drawbacks of BUCHI’s Syncore® line of parallel evaporators have been reported by users and noted in technical discussions:

High Purchase Cost

BUCHI SyncorePlus Polyvap systems list for around $44,655–$45,028 each on Fisher Scientific, while the SyncorePlus Analyst configuration is priced at $69,995–$76,201 on Fisher Scientific Canada. Such capital outlays are often cited as substantially higher than those for single‐sample rotary evaporators or other parallel evaporators.

Substantial Ongoing Maintenance Expenses

Routine upkeep—replacing vacuum covers, gaskets, belts and seals—can be costly. BUCHI’s tailored CARE “Circle” maintenance contracts (which bundle parts and labor visits) underscore that inline replacement parts are not inexpensive and that service visits carry a premium.

Large Footprint and Weight

Each Syncore platform occupies roughly 500 × 520 × 325 mm of bench space and weighs about 30 kg. Laboratories with limited bench real estate often find these dimensions challenging compared to compact single‐flask evaporators.

Cleaning and Sample Handling Burden

Parallel racks accommodate up to 96 tubes simultaneously, but disassembling, cleaning and reassembling all individual glass tubes and seals is markedly more time-consuming than servicing a single flask, and can prolong downtime.

Service Dependency Issues

A recurring theme across technical discussions is the heavy reliance on BUCHI customer service for troubleshooting. Many error conditions specifically instruct users to "Contact BUCHI Customer Service," indicating that the sophisticated control systems, while powerful, translate into dependence on expensive factory support for resolution of technical problems.

Making the Right Parallel Evaporator Choice

Overall, while the Syncore line delivers high throughput, its steep acquisition price, significant maintenance commitments, sizable bench footprint, extensive cleaning requirements and reliance on specialized technical service are commonly cited drawbacks relative to simpler evaporator alternatives.

Despite these documented challenges, BUCHI's parallel evaporators continue to serve laboratories that prioritize high-throughput sample processing and can justify the associated costs. The key to successful implementation lies in realistic budgeting that accounts for both initial capital expenditure and ongoing operational expenses, adequate laboratory space planning, and establishing reliable technical support relationships.

Laboratories with lower sample volumes or budget constraints may find that traditional single-sample evaporators better meet their needs, while high-throughput facilities often determine that the productivity gains offset the higher costs and complexity. Ultimately, the decision should be based on a thorough cost-benefit analysis that considers sample volumes, available resources, and long-term operational requirements specific to each laboratory's unique circumstances.

If evaporating 8–10 samples of 50–250 mL is required, there are other options. Organomation’s S-EVAP is a straightforward, high-volume workhorse optimized for solvent recovery. The design is rugged, simpler to maintain, and well established in environmental-testing SOPs.
