SpeedVac vs. CentriVap: What Lab Managers Searching for the Industry's Best-Known Concentrator Need to Know

If you've ever typed "SpeedVac" into Google before buying a centrifugal vacuum concentrator, you're not alone — and you're also, technically, searching for a brand name. SpeedVac is a registered trademark, originally filed by Savant Instruments in 1987 and now owned by Thermo Fisher Scientific. Decades later, it's become the default search term for an entire equipment category, the same way "Kleenex" stands in for tissues. The name recognition runs so deep that even third-party sellers listing competing brands sometimes describe their equipment generically as a "speedvac concentrator," regardless of who actually manufactures it.

That's worth knowing before you shop, because brand recognition and bench performance are two different conversations. We pulled the spec sheets on two of the most common centrifugal vacuum concentrators on the market today — the Thermo Fisher Savant SpeedVac SPD120 and the Labconco CentriVap — and ran a side-by-side comparison. Price: A Meaningful Gap

The CentriVap typically runs $7,000–$8,000 USD, while the SpeedVac SPD120 generally lands between $9,000 and $11,000 USD. Part of that gap comes down to how each system is packaged. Thermo Fisher sells the SPD120 as a modular kit that bundles the concentrator with a separate universal vacuum system, an oil-free pump, a refrigerated vapor trap, and tubing accessories. The CentriVap, by contrast, ships closer to a turnkey bench unit. For labs comparing sticker price alone, that gap is real — but it's worth pricing the full kit, not just the headline unit, before assuming you've found the better deal.

 

Capacity and Sample Volume

This is where the two systems diverge most by design philosophy. The CentriVap accommodates up to 148 samples per run, while the SPD120 tops out at 120. If your lab runs high volumes of small samples — DNA preps, peptide fractions, environmental extracts — that extra throughput compounds over a year of runs. Labconco's CentriVap Pro line takes this further, with stackable rotors pushing capacity to 312 samples for labs that have outgrown standard benchtop models.

The SPD120 flips the equation on volume: it handles up to 50 mL per sample versus 25 mL on the CentriVap. So the real question isn't which unit is "better" overall — it's whether your workflow is built around many smaller samples or fewer, larger ones.

 

Temperature Range and Solvent Compatibility

The CentriVap's 0–100°C range gives it more headroom at both ends, useful for labs running temperature-sensitive biologics at the low end and higher-boiling solvents at the high end. The SPD120 operates within a narrower 35–80°C band. That narrower range isn't an oversight — Thermo Fisher positions the SPD120 specifically for evaporation of non-aggressive organics and standard molecular biology workflows, rather than the broader solvent chemistry that pharmaceutical and environmental labs often handle. If your samples never leave that lane, the SPD120's range is plenty. If they do, the CentriVap's wider window gives you more flexibility without reaching for a second instrument.

 

Centrifugation and Build Quality

Vortex speed favors the CentriVap at 1,725 rpm versus 1,600 rpm on the SPD120 — a modest but real difference in centrifugal force during evaporation, which helps prevent bumping and foaming and improves recovery of trace solutes. The CentriVap also includes a Quick-Stop system that bleeds air into the chamber and halts the rotor within seconds of run completion, a detail that matters when you're running back-to-back batches.

On construction, the CentriVap ships standard with an acrylic lid, with a glass upgrade available, while the SPD120 includes glass as standard. Both units are designed for fume hood placement with comparable footprints, and both carry a one-year warranty.

 

Matching the Instrument to Your Application

Spec sheets only tell part of the story — the better question is which workflows each instrument was actually built around. The SPD120 is positioned by Thermo Fisher for molecular biology applications: drying down DNA preps, oligos, and other aqueous biological samples where the solvent chemistry stays relatively gentle. That's a large slice of academic and biotech bench work, and for those labs the SPD120's narrower temperature band and glass lid are a non-issue.

The CentriVap's broader temperature range and PTFE-coated, chemically resistant chamber make it the more flexible choice for labs that move between sample types — pharmaceutical formulation work, environmental extracts, food and beverage residue analysis, and general analytical chemistry — without needing to qualify a second concentrator for the more demanding solvents. If your lab runs a mix of biological and non-biological samples on the same bench, that flexibility tends to matter more day-to-day than it shows up on a one-page comparison chart.

 

So Why Does "SpeedVac" Win the Search, Even When It Doesn't Win the Spec Sheet?

Brand recognition is sticky in lab equipment the same way it is anywhere else. SpeedVac has been on the market for nearly four decades, and Thermo Fisher's own product materials lean on that history, citing more than fifty years of cumulative engineering experience behind the Savant SpeedVac platform. That kind of institutional memory matters for trust — but it doesn't show up on a spec sheet, and it isn't the same thing as winning on price, throughput, or temperature flexibility.

 

The Bottom Line

If your lab needs higher sample throughput, a wider operating temperature range, and a lower upfront investment, the Labconco CentriVap is the stronger fit. If you're standardized on Thermo Fisher's modular ecosystem or specifically need the larger 50 mL sample capacity, the SPD120 still has a place.
