Solvent Removal Challenges

/ David Oliva

Managers of analytical laboratories are faced with many unique challenges as they aim to grow their business. Whole publications and websites such as Lab Manager are dedicated to providing advice on how labs can grow sustainably and profitably. While a major oversimplification, a common dilemma is the need to cost effectively boost the number of tests performed, and possibly the amount of customers served, each day.

In my discussions during visits to our customers' laboratories, one recurring instrumentation challenge is that the product which was originally a great fit for the lab, is becoming a hinderance. What happened? Simply put - the laboratory's needs evolved over time. In these situations, the instrumentation needs to be altered to be in line with the organization's current requirements. For example, while the 24 position N-EVAP continues to be the most widely used Organomation blowdown evaporator, several customers I have met with this year have become interested in and purchased the N-EVAP which can hold 45 sample vials.

The need to concentrate a batch of identical samples is very common for analytical laboratories. As certain tests become more popular, the amount of samples that technicians are looking to prepare at once will increase. Batch evaporators, such as the TurboVap LV and Organomation's smallest MULTIVAP, hold 50 and 48 samples respectively. However, a common complaint of fast growing analytical labs is that they now want to dry down 60 or more samples at a time. For a TurboVap LV user who is happy with a water bath model, moving to the 64 or 100 position MULTIVAP evaporator could dramatically improve their sample preparation.

At Organomation, we offer a robust trade in program in an effort to support customers as their sample preparation challenges evolve. Additionally, a recent area of focus has been more thoroughly researching the applications of our long standing customers. Simply put, we have found that just because a customer is generally happy with their instrument and wants to order a new unit, does not mean that they have the ideal sample concentration workstation for them.

Whether your laboratory needs have evolved over the years, you're looking to increase your sample capacity, or you just aren't fully satisfied with your current evaporator setup, our experts are here to help. Contact us at sales@organomation.com to discuss your sample preparation needs, or to set up a consultation call.
