If you've started shopping for an on-site nitrogen generator for your sample concentration workflow, you've almost certainly run into two names: our own NITRO-GEN, and Parker's NitroVap line. That's not a coincidence. Industry market research consistently names Parker Hannifin and Peak Scientific Instruments among the handful of companies that dominate the laboratory gas generator space worldwide, alongside players like Claind and Linde. Nitrogen generators specifically make up the largest slice of that market, driven almost entirely by gas chromatography and sample prep demand.
So when a lab manager asks us "NITRO-GEN or NitroVap?", they're really asking a more useful question: which generator matches the flow, pressure, and purity my evaporator actually needs — without me overpaying for capacity I'll never use? That's the question this post is built to answer.
A few things jump out immediately. NitroVap wins decisively on raw flow — it's built to feed high-throughput systems. NITRO-GEN wins decisively on price, footprint, and output pressure. Neither generator ships with a compressor, so that's a wash. And purity floors are nearly identical — but as we'll get into, "up to 99%" doesn't mean much without knowing the flow rate it was measured at.

Flow Rate Isn't the Whole Story
The biggest mistake labs make when comparing nitrogen generators is shopping by max flow rate alone. Every membrane and PSA-based generator — NITRO-GEN and NitroVap both use this technology — trades purity for flow. Push more gas through the membrane, and oxygen contamination rises with it.
That tradeoff shows up clearly in the spec sheet. NitroVap's headline numbers (140 and 287 L/min) are achievable, but only around 90% purity. To hit a purity level most sample prep chemists actually want — 95% or higher — the real usable flow drops to 62 L/min on the 1LV and 124 L/min on the 2LV. NITRO-GEN's ceiling is lower in absolute terms, but its rated 19 L/min already assumes 95% purity, so there's no asterisk to account for.
Why does 95% matter as a line in the sand? Nitrogen used for solvent evaporation doesn't need to be ultra-high-purity the way GC carrier gas does — moisture content matters more than oxygen content for blowdown applications. But across most industrial and laboratory uses, 95% is the generally accepted floor where nitrogen reliably displaces enough oxygen to protect oxidation-sensitive analytes during concentration.
Matching the Generator to Your Evaporator
The right generator depends entirely on what's on the other end of the gas line. Here's where the two products sort themselves out by use case:
NITRO-GEN is the right fit for:
- Organomation N-EVAP (up to 45 positions) — needs 8–33 L/min depending on configuration
- Organomation MULTIVAP (up to 100 positions) — needs 16–33 L/min
- Thermo Fisher Reacti-Vap — a notoriously low-pressure, low-flow system (up to 2 psi, ~9 L/min) that NITRO-GEN's lower output pressure range handles cleanly
NitroVap is the right fit for:
- Labconco RapidVap N2/48 and Vertex systems — these pull 100–185 L/min and need NitroVap's higher ceiling
- Biotage TurboVap II/LV systems — both the 24- and 48-position configurations run at 58–130 psi and 120–160 L/min, well beyond what any benchtop membrane generator in NITRO-GEN's class can supply

The Cost Conversation Nobody Skips
Here's the part that tends to decide things: a NitroVap-1LV runs roughly two to three times the list price of a NITRO-GEN, and the 2LV pushes closer to four times. If your evaporator only needs single-digit-to-low-20s L/min — which covers the vast majority of benchtop nitrogen evaporators on the market — that's a meaningful premium for flow capacity you'll never draw on.
NITRO-GEN is also dramatically smaller and lighter (13.25 lbs. vs. 53 lbs.), which matters more than it sounds like once you're trying to fit a generator under a fume hood or on a crowded bench rather than carving out dedicated floor space.
None of this is a knock on NitroVap. If you're running a Vertex or a TurboVap, you need the flow, full stop, and Parker has built a genuinely solid product for that tier. But if your lab is buying generator capacity to match a future evaporator you don't own yet, you're paying for headroom instead of throughput.
